When it was built in 1961, the Space Needle was the tallest building on the west coast. Now there are 8 taller buildings in Seattle alone, and 18 which are taller than its observation deck. Toronto’s CN tower is 3 times the height of the Space Needle.
This is supposed to be the symbol of our city, a beacon of progress and hope for the future, but the future has come and Seattle has outgrown its monument. Maintaining views from the needle stifles development around it, hampering our city’s growth.
We should make it bigger. Double the size (368 meters or 1210 feet) and build the new one right next to the current location so it can stay open during construction. It took less than a year to construct originally, so this should be easy compared to the other megaprojects we’re building.
