More information on Seattle’s “Interim State Zoning Compliance” (bill 120969), and the proposed amendments that could majorly impact it

u/bennetthaselton did some great reporting about today’s public comments at the city council meeting. The amendments are especially interesting because certain ones were brought up explicitly in public comments. They have not been passed yet so there is still time to make your voices heard.

I thought Capitol Hill Seattle’s coverage leading up to this was informative.

IMO, the most alarming and NIMBY amendments that you should care about is Amendment 8 by Moore. The amendment says it best: maintain the current requirements for yards in Neighborhood Residential (NR) zones.

It is arguably the poison pill amendment. It preserves 20 feet front and rear setbacks for Neighborhood Residential/NR/SFH zones. This would significantly impact the current allowable density on NR lots in the bill.

Again, the amendment literally spells it out:

It would reduce flexibility in site design, particularly on smaller lots, but could also maintain larger open spaces between buildings and the street or the back of the lot.

If you care about this one-time opportunity to increase housing abundance in Seattle, please contact your representatives on the council and make your voice heard on this and other amendments.
