Hello good people of Seattle,
For context I am going to give the full run down of my not so fun weekend. I was recently let go out of no where, without any reason or warning from a job I rather liked. It was my first time working at a local store and I have always had an interest in the things we sold. I recently came down with some bad health due to my ongoing disabilities getting worse and let my employers know back in march that I would most likely be applying for FMLA.
I was planning on taking my partner out of town to celebrate four years. This trip was preplanned four weeks in advance with my work. I left on Saturday and got back on Wednesday night. I was only on the schedule this week twice for Thursday and Friday. I came back from a vacation to celebrate my partners anniversary and sadly got a sinus infection halfway through Wednesday. Thursday morning, I texted work asking if it would be okay to use sick time, I didn’t hear back so I called my boss and told them that I had a bad infection but could still come in if need be. They said feel free to use the sick time so I did.
I had some time after resting for most of the afternoon so I decided to submit my FMLA and sent an email to work saying that I was doing so. I woke up Friday morning feeling slightly better due to some meds I was now on and headed to work. I had no calls, emails or notification from anyone at work.
I show up at work and see a different boss hanging out right outside the doors. I wave and walk over. “I didn’t know you were working today?” He says “Oh, I didn’t see ya, I didn’t get time to prepare..um, sorry but we are terminating you starting today and I need your keys..sorry.” I simply say “okay, but um, why?” Sorta still, just like, very much in shock. I could feel the adrenaline kick in and build up. I wanted to cry but also just wanted to know. He said “I don’t really know and was told to tell you to refer all questions to” My bosses boss. I hand the keys and walk away as fast as I can before breaking down…
Yesterday, I applied for unemployment, disability and SSI. You see, I am disabled, I am trans and I have to move out mind June…my work knew all of that so letting me go without warning and like this hurts a lot more. My questions are, would I be okay with applying using my unemployment or will that not be seen as income here in Seattle while I look for something else? Are there any resources you would recommend I look into? Do you know any at home jobs hiring for sales or tech support?
As always, thank you Seattle for being the most welcome place I have ever lived, I happily welcome any and all advice.
