Great time to take care of your foxtails! (whether you want to or not)

Great time to take care of your foxtails! (whether you want to or not)

If you’ve been out walking lately, you’ve probably noticed foxtails cropping up all over, especially in the grassy strips in front of newer homes without established yards or along fence lines hidden between beautiful flowers and native grasses. Most are still green right now, which makes this the best time to remove them safely (no pricking your finger or having the heads fly off without a moments notice).

Whether you have pets or just care about your neighbors and the community spirit, pulling these out now is a life saving measure. Once foxtails dry out and turn yellow, their barbed ends can easily lodge in paws, ears, noses, and even lungs; causing serious health issues or worse.

If you’re passionate about native plants, rest easy knowing foxtails aren’t native to North America (especially not the PNW) and they grow aggressively. Getting rid of them helps both our local ecosystem and our community.

We might not be able to eliminate foxtails entirely, but clearing them from your yard goes a long way in protecting your neighborhood.

[How to dispose of them]

  • BEST: If you are able to, uproot the whole plant so it doesn’t continue to grow.
  • STILL GOOD: grab the heads, or trim the plant as much as possible.
  • Take the plant and heads, bag them and trash them.
  • do not add to compost. These seeds are resilient and will not break down and will sprout more plants in gardens down the line.
  • If you own your property or have the ability to landscape, think about using a crabgrass pre-emergent next spring so you don’t have to do this every year.

Addition: I did just find another post on here that was warning of these little buggers but generally pointed towards pet owners. One of the comments there peeked my interest and felt like it could go a long way here as well.
