Is it just me or is Issaquah the most poorly planned city on the Eastside?

I’m sorry to trash our neighbor to the east but I frequent that town and find it mind-numbingly frustrating to get around:

  • Most of central Issaquah is just massive arterials (17th Ave/SR-900, E Lake Sammamish Pkwy, Gilman Blvd) criss-crossing each other at weird angles so there are tons of stop lights everywhere and a lot of unoptimized traffic low
  • The historic Front Street downtown is hard to get to, constantly gridlocked, and really doesn’t feature that much aside from a few shops
  • The Issaquah Transit Center is the only transit center on the Eastside not remotely close to the downtown business district – Bellevue, Kirkland, and Redmond all have their TCs downtown
  • Not only that, Issaquah TC is in that weirdly industrial zone and there’s not much of a residential population in the vicinity
  • Virtually all of the commercial/shopping is in three strip-mally areas: around Costco, Gilman, and whatever that area is called with the Home Depot/Fred Meyer
  • And then you randomly have the Highlands, which is master-planned but basically set a ton of Issaquah’s growth outside the historic city and despite being “new urbanist,” is still super car-dependent

I get it’s an old mining/timber town turned suburb, but honestly I much more enjoy Bellevue and Kirkland.
