Grunge/Punk Joke Over My Head

Visiting Seattle for the first time right now, and the guy that took us up the elevator at the space needle made a joke that I’m sure is very funny with insider knowledge, and I’m mad I don’t get it. I’m not going to nail it, but he basically pointed out Capitol Hill and said “that’s where grunge and punk lived until a band called Death Cab For Cutie came around,” and later pointed to Belltown (iirc) and said “and that’s where grunge and punk are still alive and well today.”

He was talking really fast and dry and he was really funny, I just didn’t get the context of this joke. I’ve been a big fan of every Ben Gibbard project, but have never had the geographical or cultural context of the neighborhoods of Seattle. Any explanation is appreciated!
