Wondering why people are still on the streets?

I just applied for housing and I’m looking at a 7 month to one year wait. That’s considered short!! I’m currently rotating between my friend’s places but I really don’t know if I can keep staying with them for that long. I also have disabilities that make working more than part time hard, especially with doctor’s appointments that I need to go to.

I’m lucky in that I don’t do drugs other than medical weed, am younger, and am motivated to find housing. That’s not even taking into account how I need a wheelchair accessible unit!! Which adds wait time!

About half of homeless people have an intellectual disability or a physical disability. This is at a rate of 2.5x higher than the general population.

If anyone knows more resources or wants to help that’s awesome but I just thought it would be worth giving my experience of what it’s like as someone who is currently homeless.

Ideally we start building more housing for disabled folks so we don’t end up homeless in the first place and allows for more help. But the fact is that if my friends get tired of helping me I’m roughing it on the streets for realsies.
