Why is Snohomish County more integrated into Seattle than Pierce County?

This is something that I’ve always been wondering, because according to Wikipedia:

Snohomish County – pop. 827,000 (Everett 110,000)

Pierce County – pop. 921,000 (Tacoma 219,000)

Everett and Tacoma are both roughly equidistant from Seattle via I-5. But going south from Seattle, you also get the airport and JBLM. Yet it always seems to me that people still consider Lynnwood, going all the way north Marysville/Arlington, to still be part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Going south, the Seattle metropolitan area seems to stop at around Federal Way and Auburn. Why is Tacoma its own secluded island, while Everett might as well be a northern suburb of Seattle?
