Tranny Shop recommendation?

A buddy of mine’s transmission is dying. It’s a 2007 Volkswagen, I don’t remember the exact model.

I told him, since the engine is less than 100k and it was taken care of. It’s probably worthwhile to get a new tranny, he’ll probably be good for another 150k-220k.

He got a quote for $8,200 for a remanufactured tranny. Which is a hard decision to proceed with, consider he bough his car for like $7k used. I also think $8.2k is really steep, when my old Expedition’s tranny went out in 2017, a shop in Moscow,ID quote me around $4k total. And 4r100 is a heavy duty truck’s tranny, yet somehow the smaller VW’s tranny cost 2x more.

Any recommendations for tranny shop in town? Not just a general mechanic shop, but actually transmission specialist.

Ideally even a “nationwide” tranny shop. He’s moving to TX/OR soon. So if he needs to warrant his tranny after repair for whatever reason, he doesn’t need to come all the way back up to WA.
