Bellevue friends, I ask that we focus on respectful policy and fact-based discussions, not personal attacks or character smears

Hey everyone, my name is Naren Briar. I’ve had the pleasure of engaging with many of you on here over the past year in what I would describe as a respectful and constructive manner, and I truly love and appreciate the support (and constructive feedback) you’ve shown me along the way.

Over the past couple of days, people have sent me links to Reddit posts from accounts that are either in support of or in opposition to my campaign. I can’t control what others may say about me or my stances, but I ask that anyone who discusses our race do so with compassion and respect.

I am really disheartened by some of the rhetoric I’ve seen on here, including from some of my own supporters. To top it off, there was a really hurtful mailer (an Independent Expenditure) sent out in support of me that painted my opponent in a negative light. I had no control over this and made a public statement rejecting it. Amid federal and international polarization, I believe the least we can do here in Bellevue is show one another goodwill and compassion.

I am running on public safety, fiscal responsibility, affordability, expanding walkability, and investing in the arts and more. I certainly have my policy disagreements with Mr. Lee, and I personally believe there should have been better accountability for his history of fines and ethical breaches while in office, but I state these contentions with facts and citations. I do not believe in smearing his character. And I reject this behavior.

Ultimately, Mr.Lee is incredibly kind and fun to chat with. (Seriously, you should hit him up for a nice conversation; I’m sure he would be willing to meet with you!) I wholly reject the recent posts that refer to his age as a disqualifying contention. I have personally faced a lot of ageism, and I do not think it is fair to consider either of our ages in this race. Let’s stay focused on policy positions and leadership styles.

Lastly, I ask that we all take a deep breath and realize that every one of us running is doing so because we want to serve our community and enhance our quality of life. Thank you for reading, and regardless of who you support, be kind, factual, and don’t forget to vote!
