This rally was put together by Seattle Indivisible (and there was a stationary stage set up across 2nd Ave for the speakers, so there was no march). Several people spoke including King County Exec Girmay Zahilay, who urged people to be grateful to Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell for pledging to vote against ICE funding. (Their names sometimes get a negative reaction at local progressive rallies because of their lukewarm position on Israel, but not this time. But Marie Gluesenkamp Perez’s name got a lot of boos because of her vote to fund ICE.) Zahilay also said: “Some people like to dismiss protests and rallies as symbolic gestures. They are not. You are shaping media narratives. You are documenting the abuse of ICE agents. You are holding elected officials accountable. And most importantly, you are building the political pressure that is required to force change.” submitted by /u/bennetthaselton |
