Hello, hoping someone from LGBTQ community can help me untangle this.
I’m gay, on prep, and have an HDHP through work. I’ve been going to Kelley-Ross for prep, and until now it’s basically been free for me because they used the PrEP DAP program to cover costs.
But today they told me that PrEP DAP funding has been cut significantly, and now the program won’t cover patients who already have health insurance. The expectation is that insurance should cover PrEP under the Affordable Act.
But my insurance rejected the claim, saying the codes used were not preventive. Kelley-Ross said they can’t use other codes, it’s insurance problem. So now I have a balance to pay.
Now I’m confused because:
- PrEP requires quarterly HIV/STD labs
- My HDHP only covers one preventive visit per year
- So if I go to my regular PCP and they use preventive codes, the rest of checkups wouldn’t be free anymore. Is that actually true?
- Is this an insurance coding issue, a Kelley-Ross issue, or just HDHP hell? Under ACA, aren’t PrEP meds and required labs supposed to be preventive?
how are you getting PrEP + labs covered (or close to free)?
KelleyRoss used to be totally free for me, but not anymore.
Appreciate any advice 🙏
