The Seattle monorail support columns have been painted with the flags of teams coming here for the World Cup (and they added a soccer ball to the whale tail on each of the columns too). The Iranian flag is painted on the column at 5th and Stewart. It was originally the flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran (ie the country’s current official flag, for better or worse) but someone pasted a sheet of paper over the logo in the center turning it into the Lion and Sun flag. (I am no expert, but as best I can summarize from recent discussions: the Lion and Sun flag is often used by Iranian expats to protest human rights abuses by the Islamic Republic. However, more controversially, some Iranians have also been waving it recently at rallies in support of the U.S. attack on Iran.) submitted by /u/bennetthaselton |
