So, I’ve recently started biking up Broadway from Yesler to Pine for work, and I gotta say, it’s dangerous as fuck.
The bike lane there creates an absolutely false sense of confidence. Not only are there numerous clueless pedestrians wandering into the bike lane, trying to get to bus stops or parked cars, etc., but the position of the lane creates a hazard at every single intersection or driveway along the way.
Parked cars along that road massively reduce visibility for the bike lane from the right side driving lane. So as a biker, every time you enter a driveway or an intersection, you have to look nervously to your left for any cars that might decide to turn right. Nine times out of 10 they do not see you until they’re already in mid-turn, if they see you at all.
The problem could be solved, at least at the intersections, with right turn arrows that go red when the bike light is green. I don’t understand how the city has failed to install them. It’s actually safer to ride downtown along Fourth Ave, which has turn arrows, than it is along Broadway.
