Pedestrian Calming Measures

Pedestrian Calming Measures

As a local who walks through Pike Place almost daily to get to the waterfront, I can’t help but laugh at what I call the Market’s “pedestrian calming measures.”

The green planters in the background funnel thousands of people through a few tiny openings, creating constant bottlenecks. This is the main walkway to Overlook Walk and the waterfront. Meanwhile, cars still cruise through the Market everyday except weekends, like the taxi in this photo creeping toward a child.

Why are we slowing pedestrians instead of cars in one of the busiest pedestrian destinations in the country?

Whoever is making these decisions should move to Texas and live out their car-centric dreams.
