WC Watch Party Spot #17: Magnuson Community Center (no spoilers)

Match: France/Morocco, July 9, 1pm

Magnuson Community Center is in an old building of the former Naval Air Station in Magnuson Park, and like many of those buildings, used to perform a similar function back when the base was a going concern. In this case, it was the recreation center, and I believe in addition to a gym and maybe a bowling alley or pool, it had an auditorium, which still exists. But they didn’t use the auditorium for this watch party, instead putting up a lot of not particularly comfortable folding chairs and a screen in a multipurpose room.

The setup seemed to be overkill for the crowd, which never numbered more than 10. On the other hand, the many amenities kept everyone entertained, from a few old soccer fans to some middle schoolers to a younger kid who spent most of their time doing coloring pages in the back.

They definitely could have used a larger screen, but the sound was good, and I was pleasantly surprised at the free food (chips, juice pouches and hot dogs grilled on one of those roller grills). In addition to the coloring pages, there were stickers for the taking, and at halftime a World Cup trivia quiz with enough prizes for everyone to win a few.

There are still a few more community center watch parties and outdoor watch parties in Seattle Parks. See https://www.seattle.gov/parks/recreation/beautiful-game-series
