Hi all,
I was laid off a few months ago and while the time off has been great and I’m enjoying my first summer break in about 20 years, it’s also been a pretty lonely and isolating experience. We’ve all seen the news stories and posts – the Seattle area has been especially hit hard with layoffs and I wanted to see if there were other women who are more mid-career rather than new grads who are also going through a career-related transition and find the transitory space a little more lonely than they’d like?
Here’s the proposal:
- Meet up at a coffee shop/library in Seattle at a set cadence (biweekly or monthly)
- Location TBD but will be a spot accessible by public transport
- Working Session (1 hour)
- Quiet tables: body double with others who want unstructured, quiet working time. Apply for jobs, work on your resume, build your empire, or play a few rounds of Wordle.
- Collaboration tables: Do you need feedback on your resume? Want to practice your interview skills? Want to discuss all things Jimothy? We’ve got a table for you.
- Post-work social time
- After the working session, feel free to stick around and socialize. We might bitch about the current job market, trade corporate America horror stories, share inspiring girl dinner ideas, dissect an old episode of Gilmore Girls, or just commiserate with each other while eating croissants
Who it’s for:
- Women/non-binary
- Mid-career (vs. new grads)
- Going through a transition (e.g., laid off, exploring/switching careers, taking a career break, etc.)
- Looking to connect with folks going through a similar “season” (I know, barf)
My therapist calls this transitory time a “space for becoming” and even as I cringe at this particular branding sometimes, it really is a magical and fertile space, just a little lonely. I’m hoping there are other folks out there navigating the same space who want to connect, not just about jobs, but more about their experience in this “space for becoming”. I don’t miss a lot about my job but I do miss collaborating and just connecting with people (and a paycheck).
Please comment or DM me if you’re interested! I’ll add you to a list and if there’s enough interest, will schedule our first meeting (maybe mid-September) and send out the details. Thank you!!
(Cross-posting this in a few Seattle-area subs to reach as many people as possible — sorry for any repeats!)
