Lime cut its helmet discount from $1 to 10%. Seattle should push back.

Lime already leaves scooters on sidewalks, clutters public spaces, and expects Seattle residents to live with the consequences of its business model. Now they’ve reduced an incentive for riders to wear helmets, too.

Let’s look at the math: a $1 discount is meaningful and predictable. A 10% discount on a short ride might amount to pocket change. Why would anyone consider this an improvement when the whole point is to encourage safer behavior?

Head injuries aren’t trivial. They can mean permanent disability, lost income, and lifelong consequences for riders and their families. A helmet won’t prevent every injury, but encouraging people to wear one is common sense. We shouldn’t be moving backward on basic safety incentives.

And this is bigger than a few cents. Lime profits from using Seattle’s public spaces, while residents deal with improperly parked scooters and the consequences of irresponsible riding. The least we should expect is a meaningful commitment to safety, not a weaker incentive that makes helmet use less rewarding.

Seattle riders: complain to Lime, contact the city, and ask why this change is acceptable. If enough customers and residents speak up, we can demand that Lime restore the $1 helmet discount.

Public space isn’t Lime’s private playground, and rider safety shouldn’t be an afterthought. Who else wants this discount brought back?

Here’s your opportunity!
