Name that park! City’s invitation – and construction schedule – for long-landbanked West Seattle Junction site

(WSB file photo)

Seattle Parks is finally ready to start turning a long-landbanked Junction site into a park, and wants your name ideas. Just in from the city, four months after the project went out to bid:

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) is preparing to start construction on a new park in West Seattle! Construction is scheduled to begin in early December, start date will be weather dependent. The new park is planned to open in Fall 2027.

The future park is in the West Seattle Junction neighborhood at 4723 40th SW: half a block south of SW Alaska St, and nestled among mid-rise buildings between Fauntleroy Way SW and California Ave SW.

SPR purchased this 0.38-acre property to provide additional open space for this high-density neighborhood. The public design process occurred in 2017-2018; however, the project was placed on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic as the City focused on essential services. In September 2022, the Seattle City Council, acting as the Park District Board, approved funding for the project as part of the 2023–2028 Park District cycle.

The park will include native plantings, natural play elements, a lawn and walking areas, as well as seating and a drinking fountain.

Please help us name this new park

We have a process and welcome suggestions. The Park Naming Policy, clarifying the criteria applied when naming a park, can be found at: SPRParkNamingPolicy.pdf

The Parks Naming Committee will consider all suggestions and make a recommendation to Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent, who will make the final decision.

Please submit suggestions for park names in writing by Friday, November 20, 2026, and include an explanation of how your suggestion matches the naming criteria. Send to Seattle Parks and Recreation, Parks Naming Committee, 100 Dexter Ave. N, Seattle, WA 98109, or by e-mail to paula.hoff@seattle.gov

The city bought the site for $1.4 million in 2013.
