On my way home from work on my bike in SLU, I was in a dedicated bike lane going through an intersection. The light turned yellow on me right as I entered it, so I kept peddling through.
Through the intersection, there was a homeless man in a long coat with a hunched over posture. He started trying to cross right in front of me, while looking directly at me. He was moving slowly so I thought he was waiting for me to pass, which would’ve taken about 1.5 more seconds.
However, he does not actually wait, and continues walking right in my path as he looks at me, so I swerve and go around him. As I cross in front, he swings at me, striking my shoulder with his arm and something hits my chest and falls to the ground about 10 meters up.
I get off my bike quickly to pick it up and yell at him, but I notice that it’s a single-hand open box cutter. I yell to ask if he wants it back, he stares at me dumbfounded and mumbles something that I don’t hear, so I take it and head home.
Is this something I could file a police report for? Even though I was not actually punctured with the blade, I believe that is still technically assault with a deadly weapon. It happened right outside the Apple building, so I am sure it was captured on someone’s CCTV camera.
