My question is for SPD officers and administrators. These are honest questions and I support honest police offers and respect the difficult and dangerous jobs they have to perform. Q: I live in an apartment complex that has a resident who is an officer. Pretty much everyday I see their squad car parked in a no parking spot, which cuts the street to one lane and blocks wide vehicles such as UPS and fire trucks which often use our street to return to base. I assume the officer is probably on a lunch or possibly just hanging out on duty as it’s generally for less than an hour. Maybe they have to Park there in case a dispatch call comes in? Is this SOP or a slight abuse of privilege and illegal? From my view, it looks bad and reflects poorly on SPD.
At the same time there’s a lot of shady stuff that goes down by a few residents here (package theft transfer, intimidation of residents) and it seems this officer completely ignores it and stays hands off. Does an officer off duty at least have the obligation to report when they suspect or observe criminal activity, (and intervening when imminent or active threat to a citizen’s safety) when they are off duty? Any exceptions when it’s in or close to their residence?
