So for the people who actually have a job right now

How’s your work-life balance?

I’ve been working overtime and I know a lot of other people who have been working extra hours because they’re scared of losing their jobs and are trying to appear valuable or useful to their company in hopes that they won’t be part of the next layoff. That’s honestly such a sad sentence to write and read, but it’s the truth.

You know what though? Performance doesn’t matter to an extent. If they want to get rid of you, they will. It doesn’t matter if you are a high performer or did everything “right.” I know someone who did their best, got good performance reviews, and their position was still eliminated.

It’s really disheartening to see so many people losing their jobs and to be specific, not just tech. Many industries are firing, laying off, reorganizing, whatever they want to call it and so, so many people are jobless right now.

I was unemployed (you can see a post I made about it almost 300 days ago) so I know how it feels. I really do.

Some of my friends are recently unemployed too and I’m doing my best to offer support but at the end of the day, it is a draining, awful journey that only the jobseeker experiences. Application after application, rejection after rejection.

I know it’s tough but please don’t give up if you’re searching and want/need a job at this very instant. It only takes one yes even though you’ll get no after no after no.

For the people who can take a break from searching, take that break. Try and enjoy life then resume the search later. Sometimes, you need to rest and if you are financially stable enough to do that, I highly recommend it.

Remember, it’s the market, it’s not you. This may seem hopeless now, but it’s likely temporary, a hiccup in the grand scheme of things. A hiccup that sucks, don’t get me wrong, but in 5 years or less, hopefully you can look back at this time and then help people who are going through what you went through.

If your company is legitimately hiring or you know of a company that is, share it here for the jobseekers. If you’re a jobseeker, share what you’re looking for / what you used to do.

If I can help with referrals or offer any support, I will. I know referrals don’t do nearly as much these days, but they are still something. In general to the currently unemployed, I wish you all the best.

tl;dr people with jobs, how’s it going work-balance-wise, people without jobs, I’m sorry you’re going through this and I will try to help or offer support in the ways that I can
