A Love Letter to Seattle

Dear Seattle,

I first met you in November 2023. I was going to visit my now ex girlfriend who was attending UW. I’d never been further west than Denver at that point, so I was in for a world of shock. As soon as the plane began lowering in elevation over Washington, I was already awe struck by the snow-capped mountains, especially the crown jewel of the area, Mount Rainier.

As soon as I stepped out of the airport, I instantly noticed how crisp the cool winter air felt. What really amazed me was the link. The fact that I could get on light rail and ride it directly from the airport to the campus blew my mind. I also really enjoyed the architecture of the underground stations. You see, I’m from a college town with a pop. of 100,000. The only public transportation we have around here is the university bus system.

I was blown away by the biodiversity of the flora. I kept noting to my ex about how beautiful the trees were and how there were so many plants I’ve never seen before. There’s actually a picture of me hugging a tree haha.

Going back to the public transportation, it once again amazed me how we could catch a bus from any one point of the city and end up in any other point. I explored so much of Seattle without stepping foot in a car, a feat that is impossible where I’m from.

While I was there, I enjoyed areas like Pikes Place, Gas Works, the beautiful campus of UW, Downtown, Chinatown, and the beach along West Seattle. Each part of the city had its own unique vibe, and that’s something I really appreciated (my favorite being West Seattle).

Don’t get me started on the food. I’m a big fan of Indian food and there were so many options. Additionally, I discovered my love for Mediterranean food (and my disdain for Korean food unfortunately). I’ll never forget that pineapple fried rice I ate ate a Thai restaurant.

After my first visit, I proceeded to visit your beautiful city two more times before my ex and I broke up. For me, the breakup not only meant the end of my relationship with her, but the end of my relationship with Seattle (I MISS YOU SEATTLE). It’s been several months since we’ve broken up and I’ve healed, but I still think about my time in Seattle.

Seattle showed me what I wanted in life. I graduated college a few months ago and am still job searching. Although I don’t plan on living in Seattle anytime soon, I am searching for a job in big cities, specifically hoping to live in the walkable portions. Right now, I’m really trying to move to Minneapolis. It seems like a wonderful city. I’m hoping my path crosses with you again one day, Seattle.

Sincerely,

A random redditor
