Am I overreacting for asking someone to lower their phone volume at a restaurant?

So last night my partner and I went out for dinner at a nice spot in The Landing (Renton). We got a cozy window seat and were just enjoying the evening — until this lady arrives and seats herself at the table behind us and blasts random short videos on full volume.

After about 15 minutes of trying to ignore it, I turned around and very politely requested her in these exact words:

“Hello, sorry to disturb you but do you mind lowering your volume a little bit please? It’s a little distracting? Thank you for understanding.”

She looks at me and goes, “Why? It’s a restaurant and a public place. I’ll continue to hear it.”

I did not expect such a strong reaction. I told her I understand, but the loud phone is disturbing to have a conversation, and we came to such a place to have a peaceful time. Of course, I understand restaurants will not be quiet, but if I want to hear someone else on their phone, I would rather stay home. But she doubled down, saying she was in the right and would keep watching.

So I told her, “Alright then, I’ll just blast my videos too — seems fair.” (I didn’t actually do it, but she kept watching hers loud and proud.)

My partner asked me not to be petty and reminded me, “There’s a difference between us and them. We’re almost done anyway.”

Anyhow, the ignorant fool continued with her stuff. I pounded my beer and left. On the way out, I told the hostess that we had a great time, which got ruined with the lady watching her dumb videos behind us, so curious about the cell phone policy if any. I didn’t ask the management to interfere because: 1. I find it embarrassing to involve a third person for something this small. 2. We were done with our food, so I was finishing out my drinks.

Was I being too sensitive, or are people really this bold about playing videos out loud in restaurants now? I’m trying to gauge if I was overreacting or should I accept it to be normal if anyone blasts their phones in a sit-down restaurant.
