If someone calls you saying you missed jury duty and need to get to the courthouse asap to verify your signature or to pay a don’t it’s a scam. The same guys called me, my wife, and my uncle today running the same script.
They claim to be an officer “Mack” or someone claiming to be with the federal court in Seattle saying that you’ve missed jury duty and now there’s a warrant for your arrest unless you come to the court ASAP to verify your signature against the one on the summons.
I luckily didn’t get deep enough into the scam to understand their end game but they start by saying you need to come to the court and pay a ridiculous fine for failure to appear and contempt of court. Once they verify your signature doesn’t match what’s on the summons they’ll return the fine plus milage. My guess is they were trying to get me into my car and then tell me to not come down because it’s been sorted out and they just need my bank info to reimburse for the mileage.
I got suspicious on the call and asked them to verify their identity. They had another person call me and the number on my caller ID was the actual number for the Federal Court, they asked me to Google the phone number to confirm. It was a pretty legit scam and almost had me getting into my car to drive down to the court house to get it ironed out but it didn’t feel right. They were being very pushy and threatening to have the sheriff come to me house if I hung up.
I told my wife I thought it was a scam so she called 911 from her phone. They said it sounded suspicious so we called the actual courthouse and the clerk confirmed this is a scam.
Just want to give anyone a heads up that this is an elaborate and pretty convincing scam. I was freaked out.
