Hi all,
Has anyone successfully broken a lease here without paying the normal 3 months and re-listing fees? I looked up the RCWs and I’m just unsure, specifically for the maintenance, how bad the problem has to be before you can peace out without legal repercussions.
I moved into my new place (Cielo in First Hill, managed by Brookfield Apartments — fuck em and name and shame) in June and it’s been a headache ever since. A few issues:
-fruit fly infestation due to trash in the walls because the trash compactor has been broken for 6 weeks -Apartment power randomly trips 3-4x a week. All the outlets are on the same breaker, so I can’t do anything about it -front door FOB access constantly doesn’t work, and we weren’t given physical keys -community amenities (gym & rooftop grill) are broken and/or poorly maintained -1 of the 3 elevators was broken for 4 months, and sometimes we’d wait 7 minutes (timed) for an elevator. It’s a 31 story building, so the stairs aren’t a realistic option. -Today, I woke up to a leak in our bathroom from (I think) the air-conditioning compressor. -I’ve submitted 5 maintenance requests for various things over the past 6 weeks, and I’ve received 0 responses for any of them.
This isn’t all, but it’s enough to give an idea of the sorts of problems we’ve been having. From my reading of the RCW, none of these individually are enough grounds to terminate a lease without incurring liability. But what about in the aggregate?
Would love some advice here. I’ve resigned myself to another 10 months of this, but if I’ve got any recourse I’d love to know. Thanks all.
