We’re a family renting a house in Seattle and move-in is supposed to be tomorrow. When we toured it with the previous tenant, we noticed a strong pet odor in the room the cat slept and even saw feces on the carpet. We signed the lease on the understanding that the smell would be professionally addressed before move-in.
The landlord lives out of state and arranged to have the carpets cleaned Friday, but as of today (Sunday), the lower level and stairs still smell bad. We asked if he would get them cleaned again or what next step he’s planning to address, but hasn’t responded to our concerns about the lingering smell and basically said, “The carpets we’re cleaned. Move in is Mon.”
We’ve already paid the first month’s rent and deposit. I have to be out of my current place by Wednesday. What are our options here if the smell isn’t resolved? Can we delay the move-in or back out of the lease?
