If you’re booked on Amtrak Cascades in the near future, you may need to make alternative plans. Last night, Amtrak grounded the entire fleet of Horizon passenger cars, which comprise 90% of the Cascades fleet. As of right now, it appears that only the Seattle-Eugene run is operating with the Talgo trainset. The Coast Starlight and Empire Builder, equipped with Superliner cars are in operation along the corridor, with the Builder providing service up to Everett, and the Starlight providing service to Eugene and points south.
As of right now, we don’t know why the cars were grounded, and no timeliness has been laid out for restoration of service. There is talk of bringing Amfleet cars from back east, but that would take time.
