Does anyone know what became of these old hoverbarges that used to sit along W Marginal Way?

Does anyone know what happened to these LACV-30 hoverbarges that used to be at the Alaska Marine Lines terminal along West Marginal Way? They popped up around 2014 and disappeared around 2020. The LACV-30 (Lighter Air Cushion Vehicle, 30 tons) hovercraft has a really wacky history: 26 were built, it wasn’t considered terribly effective, and it was eventually retired after a decade in favor of traditional lighters. After military servie, some were sold into civilian use by Native Alaskans to serve difficult to reach communities. The US Postal Service considered using one to reach Bethel, Alaska along the Kuskokwim River delta, but the fact that it was horrendously inefficient with fuel and was louder than a jet fighter made them reconsider. I hope they weren’t broken up and are instead just disassembled somewhere, waiting for some kook to try and revive them. Hovercraft are cool as hell. submitted by /u/-AtomicAerials- |
