I have been talking with my coworkers and we’re fed up with our company. I’m in contact with the UFCW 3000 in attempts to unionize the company I work for. But more importantly I think baristas in this city are in a uniquely advantageous position to organize together and protect the historic coffee industry of the PNW. Owners profiteering in our community and draining it without supporting the workers that make those profits isn’t fair. They siphon out profits to their wealthy communities to pay for their vacations while we can’t even get the holiday off or take a sick day without threat of losing our jobs. Starbucks is weak and doesn’t represent the city anymore, there’s so few legacy shops left, the ones that are around are taking advantage of their employees, and the ones that used to take advantage of their employees all shut down or laid off their whole staff to find new ones.
