FYI- love letter and clarifications

FYI- love letter and clarifications

Seattle has been home for 10 years. I spent my 20s in this city. I have only nostalgia for the place I came from because all my memories of youth are now tied to Seattle- mapping the city one street at a time, one bus ride after another, one light rail trip, one urban hike, one café. I love this city and how it accepted me and made me, a brown person, feel like I belong.

The irony is that immigration rules still prevent me from calling myself a citizen of this country, because it will probably take another few years before I get a green card. Before a MAGA-type comes in with misinformation propaganda: H-1B allows immigrant intent, which means we can apply for permanent residency and eventually citizenship- it just takes years before we are able to get one.

My kid was born here. He tells his teacher that he is from Seattle, but his parents are from India. He is not an “anchor baby,” although MAGA circles these days love to use that term as a slur against children like him. We never intended for him to be an “anchor baby.” He is simply a product of our love, and of our belief in this city and our neighbors.

So it is a special kind of hurt and heartbreak when the same city-especially the progressive spaces that bring comfort to my immigrant heart-allows racists to spread the same propaganda they have been pushing on X since 2024, without anyone countering the misleading claims.

Coming back to the visa situation: we pay taxes, yet have zero political representation whatsoever, to the extent that we can risk deportation simply for expressing a political opinion. I came through one of the most rigorous legal immigration and skilled-worker visa vetting processes in the world, one that requires at least a master’s degree in my field and proven work experience to qualify, secure, and maintain a job.

No, I am not paid less than my American colleagues. Legally, I cannot be paid less than them and I’m grateful for it, because equal wage requirements are literally one of the conditions for qualifying for this visa. No, I do not escape the fear of layoffs either, which has now become a quarterly source of stress and anxiety. If I get laid off, I have roughly 60 days to find another job or leave this country.

Life is uncertain, but as an immigrant my only goal now is to give my four-year-old a sense of belonging, security, and stability.

Since the new government came into power, the racism, misinformation, and hatred directed toward H-1Bs have been eating away at me little by little. For context, H-1Bs make up only about 0.5% of the U.S. labor force, yet somehow we have been turned into a major political scapegoat, especially when every other sector of the workforce is struggling too.

One talking point I keep hearing is: “Americans are being laid off while H-1B petitions are still being filed.”

What people do not understand is that H-1B workers are laid off too. Visa status becomes irrelevant when companies cut jobs. The petitions people talk about saying “the American workers are being replaced after layoffs” are often renewals for workers who are already employed on H-1B visas and survived the latest round of GoT 😭, because these visas must be renewed every three years. So many of the petitions cited in MAGA talking points are for immigrants who are already legally employed and living here.

Lastly, yes, there are loopholes in the visa system that have been exploited by certain consulting firms and smaller companies. But larger employers -like many of the major companies in Seattle -operate under far stricter scrutiny and legal compliance requirements. DHS wage rules have to be met based on the city where the employee works, and Seattle is one of the highest prevailing wage requirement cities for H-1B qualification. Those conditions, among many others, are reviewed by the government every three years to ensure compliance.

Idk I just saw that post and felt uneasy at how comfortable people were with their lies. Not with that bullshit in the city and the people that I’m so proud, of and from whom I learn to be a better neighbor everyday 😭 like don’t hate, but H1-B jobs are not as much indentured in Seattle, but sucks to get fired especially when the clock starts ticking on your whole family right- also all tech jobs here are cutthroat atm with AI and offshoring and hantavirus prolly.

Don’t know how to end this rant, so I’m gonna tell the newer transplants that it’s Pike Place Market, not *Pike’s place* and it’s I-5 not *the I-5*. Starbucks sucks.
