My boyfriend and I went to a public tennis court today (we were playing pickleball- I know.) and when we walked up there was a guy sitting on the bench with his laptop. He said he was waiting for a friend and asked us not to play. We told him we’d go ahead and play and would leave when his friend arrived, since the court was empty and it’s a public, first-come-first-serve space. He got really upset and started escalating the situation- he stood in the middle of the court to block us, said he was “protesting,” and eventually started hitting our pickleballs off the court into a playground with children 200 ft away. He also got in our space and was yelling and waving his racket at us in an aggressive way. His friend did eventually show up so we left like we said we would. We got videos of part of the interaction (not even the worst of it) – I edited the videos to make faces and voices unrecognizable because I’m not trying to call out this individual, just his actions. Mainly posting to ask… – Is it ever acceptable to “hold” a public court like this? – What would you have done in this situation? – Is there any standard etiquette I’m missing here? This felt super ridiculous, but curious what others think. submitted by /u/OkPomegranate47 |
