How the Heck are People Surviving if They Live Anywhere Near Seattle These Days??

I want to move back to Seattle after more than 20 years away, but it seems that most of the surrounding cities where homes used to cost $200–300 K have seen prices triple. Renting isn’t much better—the average rent for houses in the neighborhoods I once lived in is now about $3,000. I understand that the minimum wage has gone up to $15 an hour, yet I can’t imagine that being enough for a new family to live comfortably. Are people who don’t make well above minimum wage now living in cars or sharing homes with two or three other families? Most of my family and friends have moved, except for those who already owned houses when I left. How are new families managing?
