I built Open Bike Map Seattle, a better free bike map for Seattle. It works 100% offline, so it’s a bit of a download for your first time.
There are a lot of apps that you can already plan your route, but many of them fail to consider many infrastructure improvements that we have here in Seattle. Using data from SDOT, in addition to normal map features, Open Bike Map Seattle prominently shows you:
- Neighborhood greenways with traffic calming
- Availability of public bike racks at destination
- Elevation curves on the map, before picking a route
- All public restrooms and other points of interest
- Bicycle wayfinding signage to expect around Seattle
- and more!
This project started purely as a way to visualize all of SDOT’s bike data in a prettier way, after they removed their beautiful PDF bike map from their website (citing accessibility issues), and quickly evolved to add routing features as I got carried away.
Please explore it and let me know what you think!
