Landlord is keeping deposit, did not do move in check list

My landlord is claiming a lot of damage was mine when it was pre-existing. I have documentation that is decent that refutes this. However, I am curious if we even need to go over the damage-documentation in court. The law states that a checklist must be signed and dated by both parties and we did no such thing. Is just taking him to court and allowing him to fail to provide any move-in checklist enough to win?

I’m concerned that somehow the judge will want to see the documents and that the judge will somehow come away with all the cumulative damage from prior tenants is solely from me and I will be held responsible for all of it.

Has anyone taken their landlord to court for holding an illegally collected security deposit?
