Me: Midwestern man on the closest thing to a vacation I’ve had in two years, enjoying the Public Market with a local friend. He’s in line for streamed rolls for us, I’m waiting next door at the bubble tea vendor.
You: A delightful woman about my age, also interested in bubble tea.
I mention that I’m in no hurry so if you know what you want, go right ahead. Believe it or not, that was true! I was so relaxed as a chronic workaholic that I genuinely didn’t know what to do with myself in a relaxing situation. You and your friends end up ordering first – by this time, bubble tea has become pretty popular.
When your order is done, I step up to the counter but so does another group, who cuts me off and starts ordering.
You yell, at a pretty impressive volume for your size, “UHM, HE WAS NEXT!” which scared the other group to the point where I’m pretty sure they just left and honestly startled me and the bubble tea vendor a bit as well.
By the time my drink was ready, I couldn’t find you. But thank you. It’s always impressive to see that kind of social enforcement in the wild. If I’m ever back in Seattle, I owe you a bubble tea.
