TLDR: who to contact when someone is having a mental health crisis?
hi! I saw the Capitol Hill naked man (the one who was in Pagliacci, presumably, unless there’s more than one) outside Peer Seattle last evening. he was shouting and stumbling into the street. someone tried giving him a sheet to cover up with, but he tossed it off.
my partner and I were concerned and called the regional mental health crisis line. the dispatcher said there was nothing they could do and advised us to call the police. we didn’t want to call the cops bc the police are historically unhelpful to people experiencing mental health crises.
the guy left for a while, but when he returned in the same state, we decided to call 911. the dispatcher said someone had already called about him, asked if he had any weapons (he didn’t), and told us to call back if anything else happened. no one showed up, and the guy disappeared.
is there not an agency or organization that will actually help? the county crisis line dispatcher told us there’s nothing they could do, but, according to the King County crisis services site, “Trained volunteers and mental health professionals… from Crisis Connections… can send mobile crisis teams to respond in-person.” there are allegedly designated crisis responders, but there’s no way to contact them directly. it seems like everyone is passing the buck off to someone else at the expense of those who need help.
