Just had the weirdest interaction with a staff member at Choice Deli & Grocery on 8th Ave in Ballard. I’ve been frequenting it for the past five years, improbably stop in couple times a month, at most once a week. Love the beer selection and usually snag when passing, sometimes pickup a teriyaki.
Today I was rushing home and quickly stopped in to snag a six pack, was trying to get home to catch some World Cup action after a 10 hour shift. I was closing out my transaction at the register and the gentleman who just handled the sale made a comment “Oh Venezuela”. I didn’t immediately follow and defaulted to asking “what happened, something in the World Cup?”. He then motioned to the TV behind me and it was playing news footage of the devastation, ongoing rescue efforts and crisis of the recent earthquake. Needless to say i felt like a fucking idiot.
I try to adjust the conversation and note my misunderstanding and get met with “You just don’t know anything about life do you?”. Now even more confused I fumble in trying to respond. Then get promoted that I should leave. So baffled and confused I do, I head back to my car. Then as I take a seat and pull away the gentleman stares me down from inside and makes sure is giving me the hardest middle finger he could.
Not the first weird interaction I’ve had with this guy (baseball cap, over 6ft, 220?). All in all I was probably in and out the door in 2 minutes. But needless to say I guess I’m never going back. I’ve had nothing but pleasant experiences here, even started visiting at the recommendation of a friend. So I guess I’ll need to move on to Chucks and/or Take 5 Market.
Not sure if I’ll post a review. But just needed to share and get it off my chest.
