Didn’t see any reviews of this show online, so figured I’d chip in. I went to Murder at the Links at Taproot Theatre yesterday. I hadn’t been to this venue before or even heard of it, but it’s super cute. It was really small, something like 150-300 people, but I liked that. Sometimes at the 5th or the Paramount, you don’t really feel you’re that close to the actors–there’s not a bad seat at the house at the Taproot. It really makes you feel like you’re getting the live theatre experience. It’s pretty cheap as well–two tickets were $90 total, and you can get even cheaper than that. I saw their next play, The Importance of Being Earnest, you can get for $30, which is just like an Imax ticket these days. Like for $30, the play doesn’t even have to be good.
Luckily, the show was good! It’s based on an Agatha Christie mystery and honestly is slightly convoluted, but the actors do a great job restating and summarizing what’s going on, like in any good mystery, so you do kind of figure things out by the end. They put a comedic spin on the mystery, most of which comes from the fact that there’s only 6 actors for maybe 15+ parts, so there’s often hat-swapping or accent switching to indicate which character is speaking. It cracked me up, anyway. Honestly, all of the actors were good, but Jeff Allen Pierce (Actor 1), was completely fantastic. He did probably 5 different voices/accents throughout the show, and each one was just this deep, resonant baritone that played perfectly with the comedic bits he was doing. Really, everyone was good. I definitely will be looking for more Taproot shows in the future.
