My wife, our 6-month-old child, and I currently live in an apartment on Capitol Hill that we otherwise love. Unfortunately, we’ve reached the point where we feel we need to move because of an ongoing conflict with our upstairs neighbor.
Whenever our baby cries for more than a couple of minutes (usually around naps or bedtime), the neighbor responds by aggressively stomping on the floor, sometimes dropping heavy objects hard enough to shake dust from our ceiling. There have also been several occasions where they’ve yelled obscenities about our baby’s crying. As you can imagine, it’s become stressful for our family.
We’ve tried to communicate respectfully and find common ground, but they have no interest in having a conversation. Our landlords have been very supportive throughout this process and have told us this tenant has a history of aggressive behavior, including punching holes in walls, and that there have been similar conflicts with previous tenants. While we appreciate our landlords’ efforts, it has become clear that this situation isn’t likely to change, and we no longer feel comfortable raising our family here.
It’s especially sad because this apartment is a catch, our other neighbors are wonderful, and Capitol Hill has been our home for 7 years.
So I’m reaching out in case anyone knows of a 2-bedroom apartment on Capitol Hill that will be available soon or this fall. We’re already checking Zillow, Apartments.com, Craigslist, and calling on yard signs, but I know some of the best opportunities come through word of mouth. If you’re planning to move, looking for someone to take over your lease, or know of an upcoming opening, I’d really appreciate a DM.
We’re hoping to stay on Capitol Hill, ideally east of Broadway.
Thank you so much for reading and for any leads or recommendations. We just want to find a place where our son can be a baby without everyone feeling on edge. Our child doesn’t cry any more than a normal baby. 15 minutes a day would be a bad day.
