I’m just trying to see how if these things are specific to Seattle rather than just a larger city. My boyfriend and I come from an East Coast city and we love it here! But a couple of things that dumbfound me:
Extreme aversion to conflict. If I’m respectfully expressing an opinion, this does not mean it’s a personal attack on you or that I’m trying to start a fight.
Strange behavior at grocery stores. I’m talking about being shoved into, your grocery carts bump, and there’s no utterance of a simple “sorry”. Where are the manners?
Passive aggressiveness. Yes, I come from a pretty confrontational city (Boston) but in no way do I consider myself confrontational. If you have a problem, speak up! Do not let things simmer inside of you.
Flakiness. Oh my god. If I’m not the one initiating get-together plans with friends, it’s not happening. My boyfriend has said the same thing about straight people, specifically. It’s less pronounced in the LGBT community, we tend to be a tighter knit community. But it’s still an issue.
Switching sidewalks. This one makes us LOL. If you’re walking on one side of the street, some people might move to the other side to avoid you. By no means are we intimidating or scary-looking, but this has happened to us multiple times. In broad daylight.
A passing “hello” is a gamble. Often it is totally unexpected and 1. They don’t say it back 2. I’m looked at like I’m from some other planet.
Anyway… has anyone experienced the same things? We’re curious.
