Pike Place Market Foundation executive director Lillian Sherman will resign effective March 7.
The announcement comes after the nonprofit was hit with a wave of public outcry when it canceled a Day of Remembrance event planned at the market this month. The foundation said the event’s “resistance” messaging did not align with its purpose as a social service organization. The nonprofit has since posted an apology on its website for backing out of the event.
The event was planned by Tsuru for Solidarity, a social justice and immigrant rights organization, to commemorate the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II and call attention to President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. The event was moved to the Chinatown International District following the foundation’s cancellation.
Sherman led the market’s nonprofit for 13 years, overseeing the organization’s fundraising efforts for the MarketFront expansion in 2017 and its COVID-19 recovery campaign.
The foundation’s board of directors will begin searching for the next executive director in the coming weeks, said spokesperson Jamie Campbell.
This is a developing story.
