Been in Seattle 10 years and the most common difficulty people have when adjusting to the city is experiencing some form of “The Seattle Freeze”. As someone who experienced “the freeze” there is some truth that Seattle people are a bit more passive aggressive and a bit more indirect with their feelings. This means someone will say “lets hang” then never be available, or people will socially flake out for no reason.
The real game changer for me was discovering that people are way more friendly in Seattle when you find a shared hobby. Sowing, book club, board games, hiking, biking whatever it is if you can find a group of people who are into the same things you are you are absolutely golden. When people go out they aren’t trying to be intentionally cold (usually) they’ve just already squaded up with their Hobby friends aren’t in the business of making new friends at a larger social gathering of randos.
I’m not saying you can’t make friends at a bar or at da club, I’m just saying if you are struggling finding a community the secret in Seattle is Hobbies. Good luck out there!
