Every weekday, at about 2:45, a school bus stops on the southbound side of 156th across from Crossroads, and drops a couple dozen kids at the apartments there.
And every few days, both lanes of northbound 156th come to a halt.
You see that big yellow concrete thing that runs down the middle of the road? That makes 156th a divided road, which means that, in Washington, you don’t have to and should not stop for a school bus that’s on the opposite side of the concrete thing.
Cuz here’s the thing: it takes that bus 4-5 minutes to drop all those kids. Bringing traffic to a standstill for 5 minutes in the southbound direction is disruptive, but can’t be helped.
Bringing traffic to a standstill for 5 minutes in the northbound direction causes a radiating traffic jam that fans out into Overlake, and doesn’t clear up for an hour.
The relevant parts of this law, the parts you need to memorize, are very simple, and I’d appreciate it if everybody would tell everybody.
