I bought a couple of sugar free energy drinks from QFC today and noticed a $0.28 sugar tax on each drink as it was rung up which seemed sus.
I figured maybe it’s because there’s some special clause about certain sugar substitutes, but I couldn’t find anything about that in the official legislation. It explicitly says it’s applied to sugary beverages. It also says that distributors are responsible for applying the tax.
Soooo… is QFC just swindling people by applying the sugar tax where it doesn’t belong? It seems like something to report, but I’m unsure how that works.
Please correct me if I have an incorrect understanding of this though! I’m just annoyed. 🤦
