reminder: If you’re visiting Kurt Cobain Park (aka Viretta Park), please park on 39th Ave and walk down the stairs, instead of East Lake Washington Blvd

I’ve taken a lot of Nirvana fans to Kurt Cobain Park (officially Viretta Park) over the years. This is the public park next to the house where Kurt Cobain died, and the park benches have become an unofficial memorial to him, covered with graffiti, candles, and flowers. (More than 10 years ago, the benches had plaques on the back that said “$1,000 fine for defacing city property”, but finally the City gave in and got rid of the plaques.)

However, if you follow directions to Viretta Park on Google Maps, it will send you to the park’s east boundary on East Lake Washington Blvd, where there is very little legal street parking, and I usually see cars parked illegally (and dangerously) in the fire lane.

There is plenty of street parking on 39th Ave E; you can park there and take the stairs down into the park.
