Sewage Lines Under Lake Washington

Sewage Lines Under Lake Washington

I stumbled upon an interesting fun fact about Bellevue in the December 4 Lake to Lake episode on YouTube. Did you know that Lake Washington has sewage lines running along its bottom?

  • In the early 1900s, the houses that were built along the shore of Lake Washington used to dump their sewage directly into the lake (gross!). In the ’50s, Bellevue Utilities decided to fix this by connecting those houses to sewer lines at the bottom of the lake called the “Lake Lines”.
  • These lines are getting old, and the city made a management plan to repair and replace these aging lines. The city wants to move most of these lines out of the water and onto the shore.
  • The project isn’t funded yet so who knows when this stuff will get built, but they seem to say it could start “as early as 2025”.

See https://bellevuewa.gov/city-government/departments/utilities/utilities-projects-plans-standards/capital-projects/lake-washington-line to dig in further.

For me, it brings up the question of who is paying for these improvements, considering that some of the wealthiest residents in Washington and state live along those shore lines. Many of them don’t even live in Bellevue, but in Yarrow Point, Medina, and so on.

About this post: I live in Bellevue and I like to summarize city council meetings and other city stuff just to know what’s going on in Bellevue. I thought I’d start sharing the interesting stuff I learned here. I’m using Google AI Studio to generate summaries of the (very long) videos and documents online, but all the words here are my own. I’m thinking about making more posts like this to help all of us know our city better.

One option for getting rid of the lake lines is put the sewer line on the shore

A second option for retiring the lake lines.
