I’ve been seeing a number of people talk about SNAP recently, so here are some facts about it. First of all, I am a SNAP recipient and have been for years. I have MS, Lyme disease, etc., etc., and I am not ashamed of this. If you didn’t know, IF YOU ARE NOT DISABLED or ELDERLY, YOU MUST WORK usually a minimum of 30 hours a week.

Nationally:

62% of SNAP participants are in families with children

37% are in families with elderly or disabled individuals

38% are in working families

Snap is one of the most essential and successful federal programs in history. Many people, including myself, rely on this to survive. As it is now, with the cost of food, the amount we get is NOT enough to sustain a nutrious diet. People without adequet nutrition often have health issues, which is a further burden to society. I attend my local senior center, and we are under threat of loosing our senior nutrition program that helps feed hundreds of seniors just in our local area. Please write your local representatives and tell them that we NEED senior nutrion programs that help the most vulnerable, lonely individuals in our country. If you have never had to go hungry, you are lucky. I AM lucky because I have the knowldge to survive, but many do not. Bullying these people and acting like they can “fend for themselves,” is ignorant and cruel. If you think we don’t need these programs, and we can rely on some other form of charity, tell me, WHERE IS IT and what are you doing to HELP?
