Someone broke into my car in late August and stole my backpack. About two weeks later, I got a text message from a 425 number claiming they had my backpack. They claimed the backpack had been thrown over their fence and they’d just decided to look for a name or number. They then said they were leaving to go to California for 6 days, and agreed to deal with the backpack when they returned.
I waited a full week, then texted again. They have not responded to any of my (3) texts or (2) calls this week. I left a message and a text offering $200 to return my stuff.
Most of the stuff in my bag would suck to lose, but is replaceable eventually. The one thing I really need is my notebook, which has 2 years of my dissertation research in it. I have parts of the notebook backed up, but not all of it.
I’m tempted to get police involved to track down the phone number and see if they can retrieve my items, but I also know how police treat people in this country, so I’m very hesitant to do that.
Are there other resources I could use to try to track this person down?
Any suggestions?
