Our house in NW Seattle was broken into a week ago and my wedding band and engagement ring were stolen. Unfortunately, we didn’t have it insured by our homeowners insurance because I assumed it would never leave my finger (turns out pregnancy weight gain begged to differ). I know the chances of recovery are slim to none, but after getting the replacement cost quote from Joseph Jewelry ($7500 vs the $4700 we originally paid for both), I figure I should at least put in some groundwork to confirm they’re not sitting in a pawn shop somewhere. So where do I start? I can see pawn shops and gold shops on Google Maps. Do I just call them up and describe the ring? Are most of these businesses honest, or is the only way to be sure they don’t have it to go in person? Anyone have any guidance? Where do people sell stolen goods — OfferUp, FB Marketplace, Craigslist, where else? It’s pretty clear SPD will be no help, though we have a case open.
